How to Care for Your Flooring

Tile & Hardwood Flooring Maintenance: How to Care for Your Flooring

Who doesn’t love the look of sparkling clean floors? Or that fresh smell that hits you after a good mopping session?

Proper maintenance of your tile or hardwood isn’t just the key to a clean home — it’s also crucial to the longevity of the flooring itself.

This week, we’re discussing a few quick tips to make sure your floors get the TLC they deserve.

Tile Flooring

Regularly scheduled cleanings:

Use a soft-bristle broom or a vacuum cleaner with a brush attachment to prevent scratching. For deeper cleaning, you mop with warm water and a mild detergent.

Be sure to steer clear of harsh chemicals that can damage the tiles or discolor the grout. Avoid any acidic or abrasive cleaners and instead opt for pH-neutral cleaners or natural solutions, like vinegar and water.

Grout maintenance:
To clean tile grout, use a grout brush or an old toothbrush with a 50/50 mixture of baking soda and water.

You can also apply a grout sealer each year to protect your flooring from stains and moisture.

Address stains promptly:
Act quickly if spills occur to prevent staining. Blot up the spills immediately and clean the area with a tile-friendly cleaner or homemade solution. Avoid using colored towels or sponges that may transfer dyes onto the tiles.

Hardwood Flooring

Regularly scheduled cleanings:
Regularly sweep or vacuuming your hardwood floors to remove loose dirt, dust, and debris. As with tile flooring, you’ll want to use a soft-bristle broom or a vacuum with a floor brush attachment to prevent scratching.

Steer clear of excess moisture:
When cleaning, be sure to avoid heavy moisture — excess water can seep into the wood causing warping or damaging the finish. Instead, use a slightly damp mop or microfiber cloth with a hardwood floor cleaner.

Wipe up spill quickly:
It’s important to address spills and accidents promptly to prevent any potential damage to your hardwood floors. Use a soft, absorbent cloth or paper towel to blot up the spill, working from the edges toward the center. Avoid rubbing, as it can spread the liquid and potentially stain the wood.

Scratch prevention:
With felt pads or furniture protectors, you can prevent scratches and dents in your hardwood flooring. Whip out those fancy area rugs or mats in  high-traffic areas, and try to avoid walking on your hardwood with shoes that could potentially scratch the surface.

Periodic deep cleaning:
Every few months, give your hardwood floors a deeper clean to remove any built up grime, using a specialized hardwood flooring cleaner. Avoid any wax-based or oil-based cleaners to prevent leftover residue on the surface.
